
Year Three Didactics
Evidence-Based Medicine Review Course (90 minutes, 14 weeks)
Hands-on review and skills practice in evidence-based medicine, using the Users' Guides to the Medical Literature: A Manual for Evidence-Based Clinical Practice as the main text. Small groups tackle worksheets on specific EBM skills (e.g. confidence intervals, survival curves, NNT, publication bias, Forest plots, etc…) followed by large group discussion. Topics are linked to articles related to the weekly Grand Rounds subject whenever possible.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (60 minutes, 24 weeks)
Introduction to basic principles and methods of cognitive and behavioral therapies, with emphasis on practical skill development in the application of CBT to anxiety disorders, sexual disorders, eating disorders, depression and borderline personality disorder.
Psychodynamic Models (60 minutes, 24 weeks)
Residents read from the five major "models" of psychodynamic theory and practice: Drive psychology, Ego Psychology, Object Relations Theory, Self Psychology, and Interpersonal Psychoanalysis. These models are compared and contrasted with an emphasis on how each theory translates to actual practice. Resident practice d eveloping comprehensive biopsychosocial case formulations from a variety of theoretical perspectives. Clinical material from the instructor, residents, and published cases is used to highlight and illustrate the theoretical material.
Advanced Psychopharmacology (75 minutes, 26 weeks)
Review of core topics in psychopharmacology as well as special topics, such as ECT, pediatric and geriatric psychopharmacology, gender and ethnic aspects of drug treatments, treatment of the medically ill, and substance abuse disorders
Family Therapy Seminar (90 minutes, 48 weeks)
Basic theory and clinical practice of couples and family therapy; survey of schools of family therapy; cultural aspects of family treatment.
Social and Community Psychiatry Seminar PGY-3 or PGY-4 (75 minutes,26 weeks)
Introduction to the history of community psychiatry, community mental health service delivery, patient advocacy, health systems research, and the financing of mental health care. Psychiatry and the law series examines topics in ethics and forensic psychiatry.
Evidence-based Child Psychiatry (90 minutes, 52 weeks)
Critical appraisal of the evidence for a wide range of treatment modalities, including pharmacological therapy, cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy and psychodynamically-based psychotherapy for children and adolescents.
