Year One
The first year is a time of enormous growth! Duke interns not only acquire essential core knowledge and skills in medicine, neurology and psychiatry, but also lay a foundation in psychotherapy skill and the practice of evidence-based medicine.
On Medicine rotations, interns join teams of residents from the Duke Internal Medicine Residency Program on general medicine services (no subspecialty services). Duke faculty lead each team whether the rotation is at Duke University Hospital or our affiliated community hospital, Durham Regional Hospital . Overnight call during most inpatient medicine rotations is every fourth night. Interns also rotate on the Med/Psych service at Duke Hospital (“GM12” or General Medicine 12), where they practice an early integration of skills with patients who have both an active medical and psychiatric diagnosis under the supervision of 6 dually trained attendings. For those interested in child psychiatry, up to 4 months of pediatrics may be substituted for medicine rotations.
On Neurology, interns rotate through the inpatient neurology service at Duke University Hospital . (The second required month of neurology occurs in the PGY-3 year, where residents can take advantage of specialty experiences in neurology at the interface with psychiatry.)
On Psychiatry, interns rotate through both Duke University Hospital and the Durham VA Medical Center, spending 2 months on each inpatient service. The Duke Hospital inpatient psychiatry unit (“Williams Ward”) serves a broad mix of patients and offers residents their primary experience with managed care inpatients and those receiving ECT. In addition, interns practice patient evaluations in the urgent care walk-in clinic at the VA (“PEC” or Psychiatric Emergency Center ) and on the consultation/liaison service at the VA. Interns on Duke Psychiatry do not take overnight call, which is managed by a PGY-2 night float resident. Intern call at the VA is about every 5 th night and is particularly manageable because a PGY-2 day float resident relieves the post-intern in the morning.
Interns attend Chairman's Rounds on Monday mornings and are excused from all clinical duties to participate in the residency's Academic Half-day each Thursday morning, regardless of their rotation.
