Highlights of Training at Duke

Program flexibility, time and support to pursue specialty interests

  • EBM is the central theme: resident receive extensive, practical skills training in information technology, critical appraisal and medical decision-making to prepare for lifelong learning
  • A critical mass of attendings and supervisors trained in EBM approaches apply these to medication and psychosocial therapies, alike
  • Weekly chairman's rounds discussing current topics in an evidence-based format
  • Protected time for weekly Academic Half-day seminars regardless of rotation
  • Core PGY-1 and 2 seminar series uses a case-based Team Learning format with expert faculty facilitators for high levels of interaction, individual accountability, and team problem-solving
  • Resident feedback from every seminar is typed and emailed to faculty the same day
  • Psychotherapy training starts early in PGY-1 year with basic skills seminar using standardized patients
  • 3 years of outpatient continuity clinic provides access to managed care patients and university students
  • 4 years of psychotherapy cases, seminars and supervision
  • Live supervision of therapy patients behind a one-way mirror starts in PGY-2
  • Live supervision of couples and families 6 hours/week occurs in PGY-3
  • Diverse inpatient experiences occur at a private university hospital, a VA medical center and a large state hospital
  • Diverse community experiences include ACT teams, rural and city mental health centers, and a federal prision
  • Intergrated training on the Med/Psych inpatient service at Duke Hospitalis supervised by 6 dually trained attendings
  • Overnight call is manageable with a night float system of ER call at Duke Hospital and a day float system at the VA
  • Program offers over a year's worth of elective time, flexibility and supporty to pursue a vast range of electives, sub-specialty topics, or one-of-a-kind interests
  • Over 400 fulltime department faculty means no competition for resources
